Kapas Island, Terengganu

Sometimes referred to as a snorkeller’s paradise, Kapas Island combines beautiful waters, pristine white sand beaches, and virgin jungle areas to create a tranquil paradise that allows traveler to have a tropical vacation like no other. Kapas Island is only a short journey from Terengganu, Malaysia and was one of the first islands off the Malaysia coast to be turned into a tourist destination back in the 1970’s. Today, those early efforts have paid off and the island exceeds the expectations of most visitors.

Exploring the Water

Kapas Island is surrounded by the beautiful, crystal waters of the South China Sea. This area is ideal for snorkeling because of the rich variety of marine life visible below the surface. Additionally, the crystal clearness of the waters means you can see more than you could in less pure waters. One of the big draws is the coral reefs, something many people never have a chance to see.

Kapas IslandWhile under the water, you might also catch a glimpse of the lovely but dangerous sea anemone and the clown fish which swim through its poisonous tentacles for protection. Again, this is another sight most people only see in aquariums. The shallow snorkeling areas around Kapas Island are also home to other amazing underwater creatures: sea slugs, angelfish, sea cucumbers, eels, giant clams, cuttlefish, even the puffer fish.

If you want to explore the deeper parts of the sea, you can also go scuba diving. Many great spots are available for going far below the surface. For example, many divers enjoy exploring the World War II ship wreckage near the island or the numerous underwater rock formations.

Exploring the Land

While the water around Kapas Island are exquisite, you don’t want to overlook the many adventures you can enjoy on land. Much of the island is still covered by untouched jungles. Travelers can explore these jungles safely on paths alone or through a 45 minute guided tour. After touring the jungle, you can relax on one of the many white sand beaches available on the island. Games of beach volleyball are popular and fun on the beach. You can also choose to just lay back and relax under the blue sky.

If you want something more secluded or are looking for the perfect beach for some swimming, there are a few on Kapas Island. Many you can reach by kayaks available from the resorts. These beaches are also popular for windsurfing and other water activities.

Getting to Kapas Island

To reach Kapas Island, you will need to take a boat from the Marang jetty located south of Terengganu. The journey takes about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the type of boat chosen for the excursion.

You can reach the jetty via a taxi ride or car drive from the airport in Terengganu which is about 30 minutes away. Terengganu can be reached by bus, car, or plane. Many visitors fly into Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur to make the trip to Kapas Island.
